UFO 50 Announced, a Collection of 50 New Games From The Creators of Spelunky

The creators of Spelunky, Downwell, and more have announced their next project: a collaborative collection of 50 brand new 8-bit games called UFO 50. The announcement trailer below gives a first glimpse at some of the games available.

The five developers involved are Derek Yu, Eirik Suhrke, Jon Perry, Paul Hubans, and Ojiro Fumoto. Each game has one person acting as a director leading its development, but all five of them had a hand in making every game in UFO 50.

A Q&A on its official site explains that these are “not microgames or minigames,” saying they are slightly smaller than a typical 8-bit game from the ’80s might be. Putting that into context, it also says that “Completing the entire collection could easily take over a hundred hours.”

The UFO 50 games span across lots of different genres as well, including RPGs, puzzle games, side scrolling action games, and even tower defense. While a majority of them are single-player, “roughly a third” have either co-op or competitive multiplayer modes too.

The collection is expected to release on PC sometime next year, with other platforms coming after. A price has not been set, but the Q&A says the developers “want it to be an easy purchase!”

Spelunky recently celebrated its 5th anniversary, and we took a look at why it’s so popular five years later.
