Film crew records Old Jail Museum’s paranormal past

A Reiki master instructor recalled that a pair of hands had clasped her neck during a wine-tasting fundraiser at Warrenton’s Old Jail Museum. A retired federal government worker from Prince William spoke of the ghost of a “very angry and very mean” Nazi soldier who followed him home one night from the historic building at 10 Ashby St. And, the jail museum’s part-time curator remembered the sound of footsteps in the building’s attic — defying any logical explanation. All three recounted their spooky stories Saturday afternoon for Twisted Paranormal Society film crews at the museum. Based in Fishersville south of …

The Ghosts of Searcy State Mental Hospital

The first ghost story I ever wrote was about Searcy State Hospital in Mount Vernon, Alabama. When I was nothing more than a lowly graduate student, I did my internship there .I fell in love with it’s history and it’s white chipped walls. Everything about this old hospital spoke to me. Before I set foot on hospital grounds, my internship director, Dr. Kay Welsh, told our small group about Searcy’s long and dark history. At the time, I was amazed that a place so steeped in history and tragedy could still be used as a psychiatric hospital.  It was even …

5 Great Paranormal Duologies

Paranormal’s become an increasingly rare find in YA since the days when young sorcerers, vampires, and werewolves ruled the shelves, which is a serious shame for those of us who love a little something super in their natural. But there have been some definite standouts creeping onto shelves in the past few years, from Sarah Rees Brennan’s Lynburn Legacy series to Kali Wallace’s Shallow Graves to Lindsay Ribar’s Rocks Fall, Everyone Dies. The titles below focus on the combination of paranormal and another of my favorite things: two-book series, aka duologies. Here are five favorites. Sekret and Skandal, by Lindsay SmithCould there be a …

The Fauquier History Museum at the Old Jail in Warrenton was filled Saturday with people in period garb re-creating some of the building’s most haunting moments in history. A team of paranormal investigators plan to spend Saturday night in the jail in hopes of collecting evidence of spirits. The Twisted Realm, a PBS program in its seventh season, will highlight the jail’s history and popular ghost stories with volunteer re-enactors. The team will also try to communicate with the same spirits from the ghost stories. Some of the stories they will explore include a hanging and sightings of apparitions that …

Out-of-body experiences?

As you lie in slumber, your spirit body snaps free and drifts upward while your physical shell is left lonely on the bed below, connected only by a fragile, silvery cord. You turn and observe yourself peacefully sleeping. Could this be evidence of the soul? Could it be proof of life after death? Reports of out-of-body experiences (OBEs) vary. Some consist of little more than a fleeting feeling that body and mind have come loose, while others recount tales of floating far from the person’s physical body and traveling to otherworldly plains. Either way, OBEs have fascinated humanity for centuries, …

Fox releases a Paranormal comedy show ‘Ghosted’ Check out the trailer

Fox comes out with a comical take on the Paranormal. Starting October first Fox plans to keep us all amused with a Comedy series ‘Ghosted’. With the endless Paranormal shows out there these days, This seems like someone has finally figured out a new twist instead of just copying another shows format and hoping the cast is liked more then the competition.   LEROY WRIGHT (Robinson) is a cynical skeptic and former missing persons detective, who, if we’re speaking frankly, thinks that “aliens” are a big ole bunch of B.S. and that people who believe in them are certifiably nuts… …

Pere La Chaise

France is filled with beautiful, old places that whisper of ghost stories.  The French, in general, don’t seem particularly superstitious.  In Ireland, I would stop and ask about ghost stories and I would find myself sitting for hours listening to so many tales I could hardly write them all down.  In France, I got looks like I had lobsters climbing out of my ears and I got the feeling most people thought I belonged in an institution.  My mother-in-law (From Brittany) would always shrivel her nose when I talked about ghosts and my friend Sonia (From “The Alps”)treated me like I was half mad.  So, …

Paranormal journalist claims to have “scientific evidence” that aliens lived alongside humans on Earth

S.O.T.T: The paranormal journalist who claims to have discovered alien remains near the Nazca lines of Peru says the extraterrestrial beings once lived in harmony among humans. At a press conference last week, Mexican paranormal journalist Jamie Maussan claimed the five mummified bodies discovered over the last two months appear “closer to reptiles than humans.” Now, Maussan, who has devoted much of his life to investigating extraterrestrial phenomenons, says x-ray, DNA and carbon 14 analysis of the remains further points to the presence of intelligent life. “We confirmed with scientific evidence the existence of beings from another world,” said Maussan to …

Stone Throwing Poltergeists

Poltergeists have always fascinated me.  There are many theories about poltergeists.  In folklore, a poltergeist is the apparent manifestation of an imperceptible but noisy, disruptive or destructive entity.   Poltergeist means “noisy ghost” in German.  Poltergeist cases differ from regular hauntings in that they are particularly loud and often cause objects to move.  Physical harm to people is also possible in these cases.  One of the most interesting types of poltergeist activity was featured in my favorite novel by Shirley Jackson, The Haunting of Hillhouse.  The stone-throwing poltergeists are rare and difficult for skeptics to explain. Stone-throwing poltergeist phenomena cases date back, at …

Ghostly Book Review: The Awakening by Sara Brooke

Jessica Penot The Awakening by Sara Brooke is a paranormal romance that was given to me by my publisher.  It was the first romance I have read with a ghost as the romantic lead and that made it engaging. Sara Redmane is a likeable woman.  She is a quiet, bookish girl who prefers to live in the worlds that exist in the pages of a novel to the real world.  Sara’s life is turned upside down when she goes to visit her friend Bobbie Trillo in Georgia.  Sara is immediately confronted by the visage of a strange man staring at …

REAL Ghosts Caught on Film? You decide!

Watching ghost videos on youtube is like sifting though a series of April Fools jokes searching for something that isn’t a joke.  Most of them seem to be false or doctored in some way.  I enjoy watching them, but I am always very skeptical because it is so easy to alter photographs and video footage. I would like to pay homage to one of my favorite youtube ghost compilations today, however,  This one is by Nuke Norway! [embedded content]   More interesting Articles from Jessica Penot

Sharon’s Ghost-A Ghost experience

Jessica Penot A friend told me this story a long time ago.  The details have been obscured by my flawed memory but her emotions remain vivid.    She was terrified by the events she described to me.  I can’t remember the specific roads she named or the city she lived in, but I remember the story and the look of horror that filled her face as she told her tale. My friend, Sharon, was a counselor where I worked.  She was older than most people that worked at the clinic with me.  Her hair was short and she wasn’t a woman who was …

Planning A Haunting Trip to New York? Let Jess help you out!

It has been a long time since I regularly posted on this blog.  I used to post every day, but as I have recently been consumed by novel writing I have lost track of my passion for the paranormal.  This seems particularly sad to me as ghosts are what pulled me to writing in the first place.  Haunted North Alabama was my first book and I still love retelling the tales from that collection of regional folklore.  With the sequel to my kindle best seller The Accidental Witch is coming out his year, I have had a …
